VENEZUELA COMES UNDER CHINA'S "PROTECTION"
There is a reason why America hasn't staged an Arab-Spring-style uprising and a fake "humanitarian" military intervention against the Communist dictatorship of Venezuela. It is because the Chinese wouldn't like it.
As the South American country's Socialist economy continues to struggle, China, now the World's largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity, has started to boost its investment in Venezuelan infrastructure. This is in addition to buying most of the country's oil.

The two presidents agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on what was called a "strategic partnership" between the two countries.
The MOU also made reference to China's expansionist "One Belt One Road" global strategy, which seeks to use profits from China's massive exports to invest in countries positioned along the land routes (Road) and sea lanes (Belt) vital to their trade, in order to exert influence over them.
As reported by the China Daily:
The two leaders agreed to bring the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to a new stage when they held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Welcoming Maduro’s 10th visit to China, Xi said that, against the backdrop of increasing instabilities and uncertainties in the world, the two countries should work together to enhance friendship and mutual trust, innovatively advance mutually beneficial cooperation and promote sustained common development...
Xi called on the two countries to intensify multilateral coordination and cooperation, jointly participate in the reform of the global governance system and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.
OK, quite a lot of diplomatic goobley-gook found its way into what is supposed to be a news report, which is why I cut most of it. But what this boils down to is:
"America, keep your hands off Venezuela. We're here now, so fuck you and your outdated Monroe Doctrine."
The Chinese attitude is that if the US can have bases in countries on its borders, like Korea and Afghanistan, then they can return the favour by dipping their toe into Latin America.
Also, China sees major benefits in investing its money in shaky Third World countries like Venezuela, because either the investment works out, in which case everyone makes money, or it doesn't, in which case the Third World country has to hand over outright control of its assets -- oil, minerals, and even food resources -- to China.

Right now the Chinese are in the process of taking over Zambia's International Airport after the African country predictably found itself unable to pay back certain debts. China already own 60% of Zambia's national media. There are many other examples of China acquiring assets in Third World Countries, as these dysfunctional nations predictably fuck up on their financial obligations and default on loans handed out by the Chinese.
Also, China isn't slow in turning this economic and soft power into hard power. As we reported here last November, the coup d'etat in Zimbabwe that removed Robert Mugabe had China's fingerprints all over it. While recently China also opened its first African military base in the small African state of Djibouti, located near to the entrance to the Red Sea which, of course, leads to the strategically vital Suez canal.
Founded on the unlikely amalgam of Chinese efficiency and Third World inefficiency, the Chinese colonial empire is definitely on the rise. Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, and whether America or Europe can rise to the challenge, remains to be seen.

Colonialism isn't that hard, all it takes is will.
